This is my "gotcha" day

Dear Mommy and / or Daddy,

I know you’re excited and I am grateful

beyond words that you picked me!

This is a big day for both of us.

If I seem nervous, wiggly, scared, excited, or all over the place, it’s because my whole world just changed again.

I’ve been through a lot, and right now I’m a bit overwhelmed and exhausted.

When you take me home today, everything that felt safe or familiar to me will disappear:

the place I knew,

the smells I trusted,

the people or animals I lived with,

and any routines that helped me feel safe.

Even if I don’t show it…

Please know that I feel it.

You are new to me, and I don’t quite feel safe yet.

What helps me most is when things move slowly, quietly and gently.

This is a lot for me and I want to start off on the right paw by learning to be calm and feel safe with you.

Two families joyfully playing with their dogs in a sunny garden.

HOW TO HELP MY NEW BEST FRIEND

❤️ BEFORE YOU DRIVE HOME

Please take about 10–15 minutes to read this while sitting in the car with your new dog.

Right now, your dog doesn’t need excitement…
they need calm, quiet, and safety.

While you’re reading quietly, you’re giving your dog something they may not have had in a long time—or maybe ever: peace and safety.

This quiet time helps your dog begin to feel safe with you.

The way we interact with our dogs shapes their behavior. Starting calm → creates calm behavior
Starting excited → creates stress behavior

The calmer your dog is now…
the calmer they will be when they get home.

❤️ Starting calm helps reduce their fear and helps your dog feel safe.

Let’s walk through a few more simple ways to help them feel safe.

Start with calm & safety

Before Driving Keep them safe

Before Driving Keep them safe

Before Driving Keep them safe

If your dog gets too excited or nervous, they may panic or try to escape

Before starting the drive, focus on safety and security

• make sure their collar is properly fitted (two fingers snug)

• use a backup leash if possible (collar + harness)

• hold the leash securely at all times or carry them if needed

• use an escape-resistant collar like a Martingale if available

• add a GPS tracker if possible (Apple AirTag, Fi or Tractive collar)

Calm handling helps your dog feel safe and prevents accidents

During the Ride Keep calm

Before Driving Keep them safe

Before Driving Keep them safe

The calmer the ride is—the calmer they will be when you arrive home.

• drive slowly and choose quiet, low-traffic routes

• keep the environment quiet (no loud talking, music, or extra stimulation)

• limit people, kids, or other animals in the car if possible

• let your dog sit where they can see you if possible (avoid the far back cargo area)

• keep windows closed and locked (slightly open is okay)

• pull over if needed to give your dog time to settle

At Home Let them rest

Before Driving Keep them safe

At Home Let them rest

Alternate potty and rest every 3-4 hours.

• potty when you get home: keep them on leash at all times—even in a fenced yard. Let them sniff, but don’t walk them yet.

• take them out each time after they rest.

• create a small, den-like space in a calm area where the family spends time.

• avoid locking them in a kennel if they aren't settling in it. We don't want the kennel to be scary.

• keep the environment small, quiet, and dim. Use hard floor surfaces when possible until potty habits are established.

• close bedroom doors and limit rest of house access for a few days.

• put a small amount of food and water in their resting area

Keep things calm and simple:

• gently guide them to rest if they seem overwhelmed

• stay nearby quietly — they don’t need attention, just calm presence

• consider sleeping near them the first few nights

• avoid visitors, walks or stimulation for a few days

Right now, your dog just needs to:

eat… drink… go potty… and sleep for a few days

The 3-3-3 Guideline

When you bring a rescue dog home, there’s a simple guideline called the 3–3–3 Rule

👉 3 days to decompress
👉 3 weeks to start adjusting
👉 3 months to begin feeling at home

This isn’t just a timeline—it’s a critical window where a dog will either begin to settle… or continue to struggle.

It’s also the same window when many dogs are either kept… or returned.

Dogs don’t adjust with time alone.
They adjust based on how they are guided.

If things move too fast, behaviors begin to escalate.

When you guide them the right way from the start, you give them the best chance to settle in and stay.

Why this matters so much

Many have come from highly stressful situations, neglect, abuse, abandonment, puppy mills, or the loss of the only home they knew.

Without proper decompression and calming guidance, their stress will continue to build.

And when that happens…
behaviors show up.

And things can quickly escalate.

Many dogs are surrendered back to the shelter within the first 3 months—right when they needed guidance the most.

When you understand what your dog is going through…
you can prevent most of these behaviors before they begin so they can stay in their FurEver Home.

We’re Here to Help You and Your Dog

The great news is—our rescue works with a dog trainer who specializes in helping rescue dogs successfully transition into their new homes.

Her business is called FurEver Home Dog Training—

because her mission is to help dogs stay in their

homes and not be surrendered for behavioral issues.

Her motto is “Training Humans to Speak Dog”—

helping you communicate with your dog

in a way they naturally understand.

She specializes in behaviors like:

reactivity or aggression
separation anxiety
excessive barking
leash pulling
jumping, overexcitement
destructive behavior, chewing
potty accidents
ignoring or not listening
fearful or shut-down behavior
door dashing or trying to escape
resource guarding
constant stress, overwhelm

Her method is called
The CALM DOG Connection.

Within this method, she created a program specifically for rescue dogs called:

The Complete 3-3-3
Rescue Dog Roadmap

Inside this program, you’ll learn how to:

• understand when your dog is overwhelmed or unsure
• read their body language
• recognize triggers before behaviors escalate
• help them stay calm through those moments
• guide them in a way that builds safety, trust, and connection

This approach is based on

deep Connection—not Correction.

When you guide your dog the right way...

they can relax
they can begin to trust you
they can learn how to be calm

—and you can build the bond you were hoping for.

CORE CONCEPTS

Whether you're starting your new dog or puppy off right… or starting over with behaviors that feel out of control…

The CALM DOG Connection is where it all begins.

This isn’t about commands.
It’s about Connection, not Correction

It's about forming an incredible bond with your dog using only eye contact, calm energy, subtle words, body language, and positive rewards.

It's about learning to guide them in a calm, safe way so they can live with less stress, more balance, and truly thrive.

The CALM DOG Connection isn’t about taking time out of your day.  It’s about how you interact with your dog throughout your day

This approach focuses on:

• understanding your dog’s signals and needs
• guiding behavior through calm, consistent leadership
• structure that builds confidence and independence
• building a calm, secure relationship

• proper mental, physical, and emotional fulfillment

• a simple daily rhythm (The FurEver Four)
• creating safety for your dog (Principles of Safety)
• calm leadership (LEADER)
